Eyes closed, eyes open

Eyes Closed, Eyes Open, a photographic exhibition curated by Victoria Cheape featuring work from four contemporary African photographers.

Nico Krijno is a South African artist who prolifically documents his life in abstract detail, creating a myriad of beautifully intimate moments. Our exhibition will also be showing Cameroon artist Patrick Wokmeni’s series Les Bell de New Bell, influenced by Nan Goldin and her mantra of ‘photograph what you know’, Wokmeni photographed women, some of them prostitutes, many of them he has known since childhood around him hometown of New Bell. Fully immersed in his surroundings he captures the women’s strength, power and resilience against the conditions around them. Monique Pelser, who lives and works in Cape Town, has created a series of self-portraits in her project ‘Roles’., the process involved taking a portrait of the sitter and then inverting the roles by changing clothes with the sitter and he/ she would take the portrait of Monique performing their role. The last artist is Abraham Oghobase, in his work Ecstatic, he makes his way to the top of vehicles around his neighbourhood in Lagos only to take a rapturous leap, in effect creating a temporary social space for himself before gravity returns him to reality.
